After hernia operation

Hernia

Darly will be going for hernia operation. There was some small bulge at the side of his body after his skin graft, which was done about one year ago. I didn’t think much about it but as Darly was gaining weight the bulge became much larger. From what I read, it must be what is called incisional hernia.

I showed a photo of Darly to Dr. Kitty from AMK and she advised to have the hernia repaired as his intestines could be torn during cat fights… and he certainly is always looking for fights!

Darly has a lump

The large lump at the right side of his body can be seen clearly when he walks… but it can’t be seen or felt when he is lying down.

Cat attack

One careless moment and Darly slipped out from the bedroom and immediately confronting his arch-enemy “Ashley” who is about half his size. I knew it was very risky but I quickly scooped Ashley into my arms. Darly jumped up and hung from my arm with his claws. When he finally let go he bit deep into my calf… managed to carry Ash to safety.

Had fever yesterday, the arm hurts much more than the leg…

It’s natural cat behaviour… when they are in a frenzy. Just lucky that Ashley didn’t turn on me, too…

Choices

Beany

Choices

I knew I shouldn’t and couldn’t …

But how could I not take you in?

Now I am awake at 3am

Because I have no heart to cage you or Darly for the night

You are afraid of Darly… and rightly so!

Wet the bed twice because you didn’t dare go to the litter-box.

How can I keep you safe?

So many fights…so may fighters!

Somehow I took in all the “bad boys?… sigh!

But to me they are the same… don’t love them any less!

You were also one of them, used to bully One-Eye Jack

And even bite the people who feed you

Now you let me carry you and inject fluids under your skin

Your appetite has improved and you put on some weight

You are running and playing at times when you feel safe…

You probably have not much time left…

How I wish I could keep you safe from bullies and happy!

But then Darly also deserves a home after all he went through…

though I had briefly considered returning him to the street.. .

Rocky has poor appetite and lost weight…dislikes the k/d diet now.

He is still looking for trouble but no longer winning the fights.

Meanwhile another 2 community cats with terminal illness… thankfully other caregivers took them in!

I am of no use anymore….

Where to get screen doors?

Beany and Rocky both love their prescription kibbles. Beany gets fed and watered at the same time. When he is finished with his food I’ll have to stop the sub-q. He is getting only about 60ml that way but at least something… Rocky is easier to handle and I can usually give him the full 100ml.

Had been considering releasing Beany and Darly as they are now caged most of the time. There had been a big fight between Darly and Ashley. I have quite a number of trouble makers… every night have to ‘jump’ out of bed once or twice to break up fights. No wonder my back doesn’t get better!

Suddenly, today I thought that if I could get some kind of screen doors then the dining area could be made into a separate room.

Anyone knows someone who can make such screen doors at low cost? Nothing fancy… just wooden frame with plastic mesh or metal… whatever is cheaper! As long as it keeps the cats separated and allows for ventilation.

Any contact or advise is greatly appreciated!

Darly the top cat

Only Hope, Ashley, Damy and Billy will challenge him while the rest of the gang respect Darly. Maybe they are intimidated by his scars or his large built…

Darly has not been in the same room with Billy Boy and Damy yet… but there has been lots of screaming and fighting through the little gap in the balcony door… always initiated by Darly.

On the other hand he can be a very scaredy cat… When people come to the door or even when my son walks by he will hide under the bed. Maybe some bad memories from his 5 years as a community cat? He still comes running when I jingle my bunch of keys.

Darly can eat huge amounts! He did have tape worm but has since been dewormed twice. Not only am I worried that he balloons but that the balloon could then burst as his skin has already been stretched to the limit. He does get second helpings but still wants more…

Four cats on antibiotics

Mango looked quite ill and resists syringe feeding. Today he is a bit more lively and no vomiting. Now Sky is not eating.

Snoopy was attacked by one of the naughty boys. I think it was Darly… saw him chasing her even though he is still wearing the E-collar. She has a wound at the tail… tail not moving.

Darly will be going for check-up on Monday and hopefully removal of stitches.

Darly all stitched up

Finally all stitched up! Seems they took some skin from his hind leg. Lucky Star Darly was hyper as usual and very hungry… gobbled up a Fussie Cat and followed by dry food. Darly may be going home on Monday.

Next to him were two cats who fell from high-rise 😦

Flap or lining…

After Jireh vet I went to Mt. Pleasant to visit Darly and bring Orange Boy for the required check-up before he can receive acupuncture treatment from Dr. Oh.

Darly is very hyper…playfully biting and scratching. Again without food and water… and in the end stitching postponed until tomorrow.

Dr Choi said he has not decided on the best method yet. He will either use a flab of skin from the leg or use the intestinal lining which has good healing properties.

Hospitalised until Tuesday

Dr. G informed me that they couldn’t do the stitching today as the skin was too tight… Dr. Choi will stitch him up on Tuesday and Darly needs to be hospitalised until then… but they will still cap the bill for the final stitching at $400.-

On vet’s request LK made some jackets for the hospital. I think Darly is now the first one using it. Lk has made some improvements to her design.

Darly hospitalized again

The 3 wounds had been shrinking a but there are problems with the stitched parts. Darly bit the stitches on the upper part of his body… before I made him wear the E-collar. The stitches on the lower part have become infected, probably because of his licking as that part was not covered by bandage. The vet is going to open it up again… sigh!

Tomorrow I will be going to Mt Pleasant and to Jireh Vet again… hoping that Darly and Orange Boy or at least one of them can be discharged.

Naughty Darly!

Some of the stitches came undone and bandage was chewed… so Darly has to wear the E-collar! Seems the wound has shrunk a little…

Giving Darly Propolis with flax-seed oil and Appelin every day. Nushi and Stoney get the same cocktail. Stoney also still has to wear the E-collar. Maybe the rash is not healing because every day I remove the collar for some time to let him do his grooming? Stoney has just completed another course of antibiotics, pred and a different cream.

Latest bill for LSD

This bill of $665.65 is for the second stitching at Mt. Pleasant. Lucky Star Darly still has an open wound about the size of my palm and two smaller ones.

Received another contribution for LSD ($100 from F)

Exploring

Lucky Star Darly is exploring for the first time…and started ripping off his bandage. His jacket has been washed and is now drying in front of the fan. Will have to put it back on before going to sleep…

Strangely, when caged he seems to leave the bandage alone.

Update on Darly aka Lucky Star

When I told LK that another $600,- came in she said “You must keep him and change his name to Lucky Star!” It’s really amazing… first that he can survive this terrible infection and then that people come forward to sponsor without me having asked anyone personally for help or having tagged facebook friends. I even had reservations of putting out a CWS appeal… but in the end no choice!

Now it looks like most of the vet bill can be covered… sigh of relief! The bills can be seen at the CWS Appeal for Darly http://www.catwelfare.org/node/4036 The latest bill will be scanned soon.

The latest bill for partial stitching is $665.- after a special discount. There is still an opening about the size of my palm. Will try to do the bandaging on my own now and LK thinks that the Propolis will make the wound heal on its own… so hopefully no need to pay another $400 for the final stitching. Lucky Star Darly is a little listless today and has poor appetite… but this is probably the aftereffect of the GA

I wonder why he is now given antibiotics, painkiller and iron tablets? After his first discharge he did not have to take any medication!

Update on sponsorship:

$600,- were sponsored by a different E and $100,- by S

Darly has been stitched

Shocked… another bill of $700.- and a final $400,- expected for closing the wound completely in about 10 days time! An estimate of $2.000,- turns out to be around $4.000.- at the end!

Me feeling sick and very tired… flu and high fever. Luckily my daughter was around to help with feeding and clearing litter trays this evening. Went to bed at 10pm yesterday but gave up trying to sleep at 3am and slowly did all the work that needed to be done…. then lied down for 2 hours before picking up Darly from hospital.

And another broken toe…

Darly in a blue cocoon today. I guess he must feel hot with all that bandaging so I keep the fan on him all the time.

Last year I broke my second toe. It healed on it’s own.. just a little crooked now. Walking was painful for a long time. Today I broke my little toe…it sticked out sideways. Hope the tape will keep it in normal position.

Darly’s Angel

Lk was also worried and couldn’t sleep so she made this nice dress for Darly to keep the bandage in place. It has an elastic neck band and velcro closings. She used her own cat for measurements 🙂

Nicely wrapped…

…but too loose!

Darly slipped out of his cocoon within two hours after I brought him back. Not possible for me alone to bandage him… so I went to AAVC.

A short while later the new bandage moved to expose a gaping hole on his belly near his genitals. Managed to place another Melolin pad over it and bandage it but not sure how long this will stay in place. How can I do this when even the technicians can’t do it well? LK advised me to bring Darly back to hospital…

Something is not right

Darly is unable to get up because something is not right with his right front leg! The vet who was in charge of Darly today said that Dr. Dennis Choi will have a look at it tomorrow.

A good friend ‘E’ sponsored $300,- today towards Darly’s huge medical bill. LK also called with the good news that she had collected another $700 from her friends! A big thanks to everyone who chipped in!

Darly is still happy and playful and eating well. The wound is healing well!

Update on Darly

The vet says Darly is doing well. She stitched part of the wound .There are still large open parts but they look a healthy red… no more greenish-yellowish stuff. The bad news is that the bill is already over $2000,- (before discount) and she won’t let me take him home… not for another week…sigh!

Please help Darly

Ok… now I can start worrying about the bills because it does not look like Darly is giving up!

He is walking and rolling around, playing, purring, grooming himself and is very curious… his eyes and ears follow everything that is going on outside his window.

Darly looks very happy today… even though they starved him because he was supposed to go for surgery, in the end the vet could not make it. Darly finished both plates of food when it finally arrived.

Another vet also mentioned how friendly Darly is… but they noticed that he doesn’t like dogs!

I will take him back for home care after the first surgery to save cost! It will be a long journey to recovery and I hope that more people will chip in to pay for his medical fees which have been estimated to reach $2000 plus.

Please send your cheque to Mount Pleasant Veterinary Centre (2008) Pte Ltd and indicate “for Darly? Any amount is appreciated!

Darly will also be up for adoption after recovery! He is really a Darling… and deserves better than what I could offer.

Waiting for response…

Waiting for Darly’s response to the antibiotics… it still can go either way!

He had been eating this morning, so they will probably remove the drip soon. The wound is dressed with honey. Again, the vet showed me pictures… not a pretty sight! It is really amazing that he looks so lively, is eating and even stretches out his chin when stroked… while his body is in such terrible condition! Dr. G says that she is waiting for some shrinkage and to be able to tell what tissue is dead and which is still alive… before cutting away.

Thanks to the kind people who have been helping financially and gave me encouragement! A friend who wants to remain anonymous sponsored the whole AAVC bill! Two others gave $100 and $30 respectively towards Darly’s medical bill at Mt Pleasant. Dr. G. estimated the total bill may come up to $2000 plus…

Will worry about that later… what needs to be done needs to be done first!

Darly hospitalized at Mt. P.

Darly is in grave condition… the vet suspects infection by mycobacteria. They are doing a culture to identify the bacteria.

The wound seemed to be healing and he had been eating on his own and taking the meds… looked bright… then today I noticed pus not only oozing from the wound but also from other parts of his belly! As Dr Girisha Lakhiani (aka Dr. G.) from Mt Pleasant Vet Center explained, the layer under the skin has been infected and the infection is spreading… most probably caused by mycobacteria. She compared it to human leprosy. They are going to open the stitches and put him on drip. Darly will need several surgeries… if he responds to treatment.

The other option would be PTS… but I want to let him have a chance even if it is a small one. His eyes look bright and he can sit up and eat! Even the vet commented that Darly is a very good-natured cat!

Darly looks a little more lively

Darly took a few bites of food on his own… but his eyes are still not responding.

Sms from Dr. Kenneth: Eyes should be ok. Give it one week for vision to return. Drainage is ok too as we left a small opening at edges to drain fluid out. Might be GA that made him zzz too.

Copper is eating well

Will probably release Copper this Friday when she has completed her course of antibiotics. Vet suggested to do a blood test as her condition could be due to FIV, FIP (dry) or kidney failure. Will wait and see… as she is eating well and poo and pee look normal.

Be strong and recover, Darly!

Found Darly crouched at the bicycle stand facing the wall… he did not react when I called him. Later he walked a few steps… looked dazed. His body was wet and there is a wound and some swelling at the side of his body. I suspect that he was hit by a car… probably not long ago during the thunderstorm.

Darly cried in pain when I lifted him up and Muddy who was next to me reacted by biting my leg. Then my bicycle with Darly in the carrier dropped… one careless moment causing him more pain!

Will bring him to the vet in the morning. Noticed that his eyes did not react to the camera flash light…

Wanted to let him listen to chanting during the night but that little radio stopped working after a few minutes…

Darly’s story

Saw a Malay lady today opening a can of Friskies for Darly. She said he was her cat but they keep him downstairs because he doesn’t know to use the toilet. How they got him? Their female cat gave birth to him…No, they did not sterilize her but gave her away to an aunt. I wonder what happened to his siblings…

Darly Boy sterilized

The black kitten with the kinky short tail was first spotted at blk *14 area 2 with a big wound at the tail, which healed in time. Later he was lost and finally reappeared at blk *03, where he has now settled with Shadow and 2 other sterilized free-roaming cats. He is a friendly boy. Will release him tonight and catch another one for tomorrows sterilisation slot.

Hope to find the new tabby girl tonight. She is quite skinny with a tight tummy, probably pregnant. The Malay feeder told me that she has been around for a long time and always giving birth…and he was wondering ‘how come still no tipped ear?’
