Healty Trees get chopped down

Thanks to Mary for the link! I am glad that Ms Tan wrote to the press. Sadly some other Town Councils also remove mature trees for frivolous reasons such as complaints of bird droppings on cars or residents with phobias of birds.

I am still very sad about the sensless cutting down of beautiful, healthy, mature trees in my neighbourhood, and the mutilation of the trees at several car parks… sigh!

My Paper Tuesday April 28, 2009

Healthy trees in Pasir Ris

get chopped down

IT WAS reported that the temperature in Singapore was above 35 deg C on April 18.

Everyone everywhere is complaining all the time about how hot the weather is.

However, little do they know that we humans are the cause.

I live in Block 580, Pasir Ris Street 53. It used to be clean and green, and I could see beautiful trees outside my window.

I would tell my children that it is thanks to the trees that we have fresh air and shade.

My son knows that the evaporation from a single large tree produces the cooling effect of 10 air-conditioning units.

Many adults do not know this fact and neither does the Pasir Ris Town Council.

I say this because town-council workers have been cutting down healthy trees in my estate, despite my appeals to the contrary.

My daughter asked why “naughty workers? were cutting down the trees which she had known since she was young. She asked if they were “sick?.

How could I explain to her that humans sometimes destroy things for their own convenience?

We do not own this planet – we share it with all living things, including trees.

Without trees, humans cannot survive.

Sometimes, I wish the trees could rise up against humans, just like in the movie, The Lord Of The Rings.

I appeal to the town council to stop cutting down healthy trees. Save our trees and save the human race.

Do we really need more reasons to go vegetarian?

Each one of us can help prevent animals from suffering in factory farms simply by choosing vegetarian options. It’s never been easier to replace animal products with readily available vegetarian alternatives.

Go vegetarian –

for the earth, for the animals and for humans!

Probation didn’t work out

Stitches and Billy Boy were at each others throat!

I restrained Billy Boy and then carried him onto the table while my daughter used an umbrella to block Stitches, who was so angry that he jumped onto the umbrella ( phew… that could have been our legs). One quick move of umbrella with cat to the cage and door closed.

See the angry face with deep lines on the forehead!

Out on probation

Naughty Stitches

Stitches trying to start fights with Billy Boy. Earlier Billy Boy would give in and retreat but this morning they were ready to settle once and for all who is the top cat here.

I was just in time… Stitches spend the day locked in the big cage. Hope he learned the lesson, if not then the two will have to take turns being caged.

Earth Poem

If the Earth were only a metre in diameter,

… floating just above the ground somewhere, people would come from everywhere to marvel at it.

People would walk round it, marvelling at it’s big pools of water. it’s little pools and the water flowing in between the pools. People would marvel at the bumps on it, and the holes in it.

They would marvel at the very thin layer of gas surrounding it and the water suspended in the gas. The people would marvel at all the creatures walking around the surface of the ball, and at the creatures in the water.

The people would declare it as sacred because it was the only one, and they would protect it so that it would not be hurt.

The ball would be the greatest wonder known, and people would come to pray to it, to be healed, to gain knowledge, to know beauty and to wonder how this could be.

People would love it and defend it with their lives because they would somehow know that their lives, their own wholeness and roundness could be nothing without it.

If the Earth were only a metre in diameter…

A sorry sight

Mutilated Trees

I estimate that about 50 trees have been “trimmed” at this car park.

It’s a painful and depressing sight!

Is no one else upset about this?

Are people so apathetic about the environment?

And what exactly is the point of planting trees if they end up like this?

Vegan Buddhist nuns have same bone density as non-vegetarians

Vegan Buddhist nuns have same bone density as non-vegetarians?

A study comparing the bone health of 105 post-menopausal vegan
Buddhist nuns and 105 non-vegetarian women, matched in every other
physical respect, has produced a surprising result. Their bone density
was identical.

The study was led by Professor Tuan Nguyen from Sydney’s Garvan
Institute of Medical Research. He collaborated with Dr Ho-Pham Thuc
Lan from the Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University in Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam. Their findings are now published online in Osteoporosis
International.

“For the 5% of people in Western countries who choose to be
vegetarians, this is very good news,? said Professor Nguyen. “Even
vegans, who eat only plant-based foods, appear to have bones as
healthy as everyone else.?

“Bone health in vegetarians, particularly vegans, has been a concern
for some time, because as a group they tend to have a lower protein
and calcium intake than the population at large.?

“In this work we showed that although the vegans studied do indeed have

lower protein and calcium intakes, their bone density is virtually identical to

that of people who eat a wide variety of foods, including animal protein.?

The new black kitten

This is the new kitten which I first saw two days ago. He seems to be okay with Darly and Darky.

He was very hungry… growling fiercely when I refilled his plate.

Could this be Heino?

Saw him at the far end of Heino’s block. He came over while I was feeding the others. He is a tame tipped-ear with silky soft fur. Could the Malay lady have been mistaken? Was Heino taken in by someone and now released back?

There was some hissing and some curious looks… maybe it’s not Heino after all.

Gretel to be spayed

Gretel and her brother Hansel are new abandonees at Area 2, *17.

Saw another new abandonee today… a black male kitten about 5 months old.

There is also a new black-and-white male at Area 1.

Worried about Muddy… he doesn’t look so well. He has large bald patches around his neck and a bit of eye discharge. There is a small wound on his left paw. I applied neem oil, eye ointment, powder.

Tale of a Survivor

Tale of a Survivor

Seven years as a street cat

roaming at the market

Up on the roofs

down in the drains

He beat the odds

He survived

Sleeping under cars

Fighting for his territory

New wounds even before the old ones

have a chance to heal

Limping badly at times

Tasting the hard life of a street cat

Finally trapped and sent to be neutered

He mellows and old enemies become friends

Life is better now for Billy Boy

He is getting chubby

But there are untold stories

A wound on his back

Was he scalded with hot water

The wound has healed

but scars and memories remain

Enough of danger and adventure

He has only one wish

to spent his old age in a safe place

But where will you go Billy Boy

Will you be happy being in a cattery

with so many others

I wish you could beat the odds

just one more time

To find a real home

To be safe and loved and cared for

BEGIN ANEW

Begin anew. …
It has been a long time since last we spoke.
It does not need to be so long.

In every moment,
the here and now —
the eternal and timeless —
is always present.
It does not take a special feat
to touch the here and now.
You only need to awaken to
this very breath, this very step.

In just one moment of mindfulness,
everything is made new,
moment to moment.

Enlightenment, peace, wisdom, joy —
these are only one breath away,
one step away.

But the question is:
Are you really there, my dear?
Are you really there in your breath, in your step?
Or are you only daydreaming, sleepwalking?

Whatever you think you’ve done wrong,
whatever penance you believe you must perform
before you can awaken,
I invite you now to let that go.

Take a slow, deep breath.
And remember the Greater Reality
which holds you,
which supports you,
which nurtures you.

Let there be a moment of awakening,
let there be several moments of awakening,
every time you rest into this Greater Reality,
the Buddha Nature, your True Self.

And as you begin to rest in your true vastness,
a healing takes place
organically and naturally —
forgiveness takes place,
understanding takes place,
reconciliation takes place —
effortlessly.

In the eternal and timeless
here and now,
you can always begin anew.

You can always find refreshment and rejuvenation
for your earthly body and human mind
as you awaken to
your Universal body and Divine mind.

Yes,
you can do it.
It is your birthless birthright.
It is your deathless inheritance.

So, my beloved,
can you drop the story,
drop the delusions?
Can you let go of
self-hate, shame and unworthiness?
Are you willing to relax your hold
on control and manipulation?
Are you willing to loosen your grasp
on false securities from false fears?

It only takes one breath,
one step,
in mindfulness,
my dear.

In just one moment of enlightenment,
you can awaken from the illusions of time,
pressure, guilt, failure and regret.

You can awaken to
the eternal and timeless
here and now —
to peace and love and wisdom,
to true strength and true joy and true beauty,
to the Buddha that I am in you and in all beings,
to the Ultimate dimension of all things —
the Divine All in all:

Dew drops on an autumn leaf …

— inspired by the Buddha in you,
as written through Br. ChiSing

The six kittens are safe now

These are 3 of the 5 young cats abandoned by the same family

The mother and her 6 kittens were placed in foster care and a police report was lodged.

First we spoke to the owner of the unit who told us that the cats belong to his sister and that he would not allow them into his flat. It was clear that he was not concerned at all about the sick kittens.

We were so worried when we saw only 4 kittens this time… but then one more came out. We thought the last one must have fallen to his death (through the gap in the wall ) … then he appeared suddenly – must have been hiding inside one of the shoes.

The caregivers later placed the 6 kittens and mother in carriers and waited for the sister and her husband… .

According to the caregivers, the sister said that they had actually planned to get the 5 cats sterilised… but when we spoke to her husband it was clear that they had no such plans ” Who are we to play god?” As expected he was neither willing to reimburse the caregivers for the sterilisation nor pay for the fostering of the mother & kittens…

The nasty “Motorbike Man” again

http://meowies.multiply.com/journal/item/272/The_motorbike_man

Yesterday this very nasty man (a large-built Indian) walked towards me while I was feeding Kinky and Midnight… he smelled of beer… telling me that I have to take this two cats away because they would always sleep on his bike. He keeps mentioning that there are now 6 people feeding these cats. In his opinion they should all be taken to SPCA to be put to sleep! Then he pointed to Sweety…. ah there is another one!

I tried to explain to him that there are less cats now because of sterilisation and that in fact I had taken away several cats and kittens from around his block (Golden Lion, Jasper, Sweet y’s 2 kittens had all been adopted). He also used to complain that Golden Lion would sit on his bike.

He would not use the mothballs and also refused to try using elastic cords to secure the bike cover. Maybe he just enjoys harassing the feeders? Why else would he refuse the moth balls especially since (according to him) he hardly ever uses the bike?

When I mentioned that it often turns out that scratches were actually made by humans… he replied that he would kill anyone who scratched his bike! He also showed me paw prints on the seat… didn’t really see any paw prints. When I pointed out that there were no scratches on the seat he replied that he had replaced it recently.

A luxurious home?

It looks more like the cats have been thrown out of their home together with their furniture. This cat tree is actually on the common corridor! Some of these kittens have flue symptoms. The caregiver will apply eye ointment and is also looking for a fosterer.

Previously this family abandoned five cats downstairs – all gingers so obliviously related. These are irresponsible owners letting their cats breed! The caregivers have sterilized the 5 cats and are are feeding them every night, but enough is enough…

They are now ready to report this case to the police, SPCA and write to the papers, STOMP… whatever it takes… let them be shamed!

Maybe there is sad story of family problems behind this… but there is simply no excuse for not sterilizing. We will try to talk to the family tonight to find out more….

Abscess drained

While feeding yesterday night I noticed a large swelling on Panther’s face.

Brought him to the vet this morning and the abscess was drained. The vet estimated Panther to be about 9 years old.

He has been around for such a long time and some residents told me that they like him very much…. whatever that means.

We shall meet again

The lightness as I float above the mangled mess of hair and blood

Was that me just a moment ago?

I turn away

Towards the light I float

So beautiful

So kind

So much love

No judgment

My mindstream is gathering strength

I understand

Nothing happened by chance

Every experience is an effect of a cause

There is no more pain now from attachment to a “body”

Be free of your pain

Your love for me is a cause for our meeting again in happy times

The Guest House

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

~ Rumi
