Steven the Vegan

A humourous video about a chef explaining his veganism…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMpHF2a-IJY

Haha…sometimes you get the most ridiculous questions.

Met with another caregiver at the hawker centre yesterday. When she asked me to share in her char-kwe-tiau, I explained that I am a strict vegetarian, who doesn’t eat meat, eggs, milk….

Hmm…but what about seafood? Do you eat fish, prawns? 🙂

Then she told me her theory that we can eat the flesh of animals that have already been slaughtered… as long as we don’t do the killing. I explained about demand and supply…

Xiao Qiang caught by AVA

I received an sms from Juliana at 4.30pm that Xiao Hei’s son Boy Boy aka Xiao Qiang was caught by AVA this afternoon.

Terry was supposed to catch him for sterilisation but he did not see him on the day he came down.

When I called AVA I was told that the dog could not be claimed, as it was a police case…he had attacked someone. All I could bargain for was to keep him alive for 2 days until Friday.

I talked to the police and also to the lady who was bitten. She herself does not want the dog to be killed. Seems Xiao Qiang wanted to play with her handbag and bit her calf when she didn’t let go. She said that the bite wound is not serious and that it looked more like a cat scratch.

A Tribute for Old Ginger

From Eslina’s blog: http://eslina.multiply.com/journal/item/85/A_Tribute_for_Old_Ginger

Pawprints in my Heart

My lap is too too empty, and cold
the soft resting head no longer there to warm it.
No comfort to be found, no furry body to stroke
my quiet companion gone….

My heart is broken, there are no other words
to write it – this empty ache, this space
you filled, loving always, never judging…
My friend has left, and my hands, arms, all
helpless to stop it.

Little one, fly free, where the fields are green
and filled with friends gone before. I will
carry you always, your pawprints ever beating,
running joyously to greet me whenever I call
and memory stirs in my heart…

Ooops…Bunny is a boy!

Bunny wouldn’t let me handle him until he was released. Then the next day I lifted Bunny up to check the wound…and there was no wound and no belly hair shaved. Puzzled, I looked at his back again …and on closer inspection it looks like a very underdeveloped male. Good that the vet double-checked 🙂

Cinderella

Cinderella has developed an abscess. It started draining yesterday and now the swelling has subsided. She is on antibiotics and I will have to keep her for a few more days. It already looks much better now, starting to dry up.

Old Ginger

Old Ginger is growing thiner and weaker. He has stopped eating on his own. I try to make him comfortable but he likes to curl up on a small stool in the corner most of the time.

Fury missing

Fury went missing on Wednesday and did not turn up at SPCA or AVA. She was still eating well on Tuesday but has lost much weight…. I guess the tumor was cancerous and had spread to other organs. Hope she is not suffering wherever she is. She had become quite sweet-tempered after her illness and I would always stroke her and lift her up so that I would be able to put her into the carrier when she gets ill again.

So much for plans and expectations…

When I spoke with the complainant it turned out that actually she had no problems with the community cats at her block. She had complained about her neighbour’s cats… one of them ran into her flat once…but then she also wanted to drop the matter as she and the neighbour are on good terms.

I had talked to that family before about getting their 4 cats sterilised some time ago…but they were still not done. The cats are well taken care of, no feeding on the corridor, no smell no defecation. Will help them to get the female sterilised next week using my last voucher.

From what I noticed, the cats stay mostly indoors even though the door is open. The family agreed to put back the wire mesh, which they had removed recently and stored at the corridor.

Newcomer Benny

Benny, the new cat at the *25 area 2 power station, now sporting a tipped ear. He is a big cat but not too unfriendly so maybe he can share the place with Daisy and Dusty…

Fizah messaged me that the kittens miss their mother and are not eating well. I went over to pass her some can food for the kittens and mentioned how skinny the mother cat was. She said that she ate a lot and that she thought the cat might be sick…

The kittens seem ok, so I will let Cinderella rest for 2 more days…she looks happy

Got a frantic call from the caregiver this morning… I had met Penny only once, more than a year ago, when she approached me to help her sterilize the cats in her area. I refused, as I have my hands full but urged her to start sterilizing and to work with her TC. Seems she has now sterilised about 20 cats in her area, with only a few left to be done.

The Pest Control people, as well as the Town Council officer, were at the car park of blk *55 this morning. Seems the TC officer refused to talk to her and also ignored her request to speak with me over the phone. The Caregiver told me that some of the cats had already been caught…which I later found out was untrue.

The TC people had left by the time I reached there but the pest controllers were still there. They told me that they were not catching the cats today (even showed me the empty van with a cat trap in it) but they would come back… as instruction was given to catch the cats (including the tipped ears).

I will pass some CWS material to the caregiver, who said she would do a survey of the 2 blocks from where the complaints originated.

Anyone staying in this area, please call up your TC to let them know that you do not want the cats removed.

Bunny next to be sterilised

Bunny appeared at block *24 area 2 about 2 weeks ago. She is a tall cat with a bobtail. Bunny will be sterilised tomorrow.

The complainant called again…claiming Floppy slept in front of her door. she didn’t actually see her but noticed cat hair on the cloth placed between door and gate to keep the lizards out. Luckily, I remembered those plastic mats Dawn mentioned in her blog… she can get 2 of those from Daiso and place them in front of her steps. that should keep the cat away. Actually Sylvia says that the cat no longer goes up to the 9th floor…but perhaps she still does so occasionally.

Sunny’s tail broken

Yesterday night I found Sunny near the Indian temple which is quite some distance from block *28 area 1. I cycled back holding him in my arm. Then while feeding him I saw that his previously long and straight tail was now kinked in the middle…very similar to what happened to Sandy from block *26. Sunny ate his food and didn’t seem in pain.

Could there be an abuser who did this purposely? I think most likely the tail has been run over by a bicycle.

M didn’t see him this morning…

I want to do my 2 Persians first!

Cinderella will be sterilised tomorrow.

They were quite reluctant to pass me the mother cat. Fizah kept saying that she wants to do the 2 Persians first and that she doesn’t want to do the mother cat because they are not going to keep her. I pointed out that all she has to do is to place the cat in the carrier.

I am not going to ‘do’ her 2 Persians until I see Cinderella and her the 4 kittens on the CWS bulletin board for adoption.

Brought Old Ginger to the vet

Brought Old Ginger and Sophus to the vet this morning. No taxi in sight so I took the bus with the 2 carriers…pushing my luck 😉 The bus drivers on this route are ok or maybe they are just tired of me blocking their lane with my bicycle…

The vet thinks that it may be early kidney disease and prescribed Fortekor, Clavulox and something to improve appetite and also recommended k/d diet. I took one can just to try it out. It costs about the same as Avoderm but actually the latter has better ingredients and no by-products.

Old Ginger is still dehydrated and today he refused to eat the fish…will have to force-feed him again.

Old Ginger not well

Old Ginger has hardly eaten anything for the past 4 days. He would still come and look at the food and just drink a lot of water. He has become very thin again. Today he slept on the seat of a motorcycle, usually he would sleep under the cars. His former caregiver called yesterday to ask about him.

Strange that he ate so well after the operation and then after release again poor appetite and now worse…

Please send metta and prayers for Old Ginger…and also for Gemma, the sweet little boy at Phyllis’ cattery who will need a miracle to recover.

Several cats gone missing

Silvester has been missing for over a week…He was always around block *41 area 3 together with his best buddy Billy Boy. Onyx is missing from *26 area 1. Anna lost one Black Boy at *52, and Sylvia lost a Ginger-white at *78 area.

Hope they are well wherever they are… I am also sad for Billy Boy having lost both of his good friends, first Babu and now Sylvester.
